Comparing 9, the short, and 9, the full-length movie
To be completely honest, that has to be one of the most disturbing films I’ve watched in a long time. There was no talking throughout the whole short film. The setting was lifeless and looked as if this animated world had been abandoned. The plot started with two doll-like figures with some sort of numbers on their back, one being 5 and the other being 9. They end up coming across this mechanical looking monster, it looks like they went for a mixture of a lion and a dog type of design but made entirely of metal. It had bright green eyes and a disturbing roar. This monster proceeds to abduct the doll labelled 5 and uses a green portal device to kill him. The other doll that was labelled 9 was terrified and ran away to go hide. Eventually it comes to the doll labelled 9 find pieces of junk that he puts together to create a torch however, with a lightbulb doll 9 ends up attracting the monster into a abandoned cave like setting, where doll 9 intraps themself on a large wooden plank, just as things seemed to be inevitable doll 9 managed to swing off the plank and find safe ground and dropped the monster off the plank onto the ground. He then noticed that the green light that he still had was glowing. Doll 9 decided to put these two green beams of light together which created a ghostlike doll figure that began to emerge out of the light. The animation in the film was somewhat laggy. However, we should take into account that the film was created more than 10 years ago. Technology has improved drastically since 10 years ago over time.
Full film: When 9 jumps back to life, it finds itself in a post-apocalyptic world where humans no longer exist, and the only signs of life are rag dolls like itself and the machines that hunt them. Though it is the youngest of the group, doll 9 convinces other dolls that the only way to survive against the machines is to stop hiding and go out and fight back as well as find out why the machines want to destroy them. As doll 9 and the group learn, civilization hinges on their success or failure. Again, it was a dark film. The setting was very gloomy. However, this time the plot goes into more detail. We see a gradual change in character as he becomes more confident and driven. Though they are both similar this movie has more action than the last and gives the character more energy to him. Although words aren’t exchanged the director was able to convey such a strong and brave emotion through the screen.
Comparison - The full length film gave doll 9 more characteristics in terms of his personality than the short film was able to do as there was more time to introduce the character. This is because the director had more time to carry out a more detailed and elaborate plot. I found myself to enjoy the short film better as it was more straight to the point which is what I personally enjoy more. Both films used a gloomy, post apocalyptic scenery and time frame/environment which helped convey a sense of hopelessness at the beginning of both films. But this further changes as the films progress to end out with a more heroic ending.
